Upgrading and Repairing PCs, 17th Edition

Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PCs, 17th Edition is one of the best and most comprehensive, if not the best and most comprehensive PC hardware, upgrading, and repairing book available. If there is only one book on your computer bookshelf, that book should be Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PCs.

All users from new and novice to professional and advanced ought to find Upgrading and Repairing PCs 17th Edition informative, helpful, and usable. However, it is not a cartoon book. It's all easily-readable and understandable (yet serious) text, tables, charts, diagrams, and photos that are directly related to the topics discussed.

Upgrading and Repairing PCs 17th Edition includes more than 1,500 printed pages. The bonus DVD that comes with it has two hours of excellent, new videos in which Scott Mueller tells you about:

  • Dual Core Processors
  • Modern Motherboards
  • New Chassis Features
  • Power Supply Form Factors and
  • Power Supply Connectors

In the processors video, Scott Mueller gives you lots of information about the new AMD and Intel dual-core processors. He also compares the performance, price, and bang for the buck of the AMD and Intel dual-core CPUs.

The included DVD also has lots of technical reference information and the entire text of several previous editions of Scott's book. Heck, the DVD alone is more than worth the $60 price tag for the book and the DVD.

Having several previous editions of Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PCs on a DVD is particularly handy when you are looking for specific information. Simply open one of the previous editions in a PDF reader with search capability and search for a specific term or phrase.

At press time, Que Publishing is offering a 10% discount if you buy Upgrading and Repairing PCs DVD, 17th Edition directly from Que. That makes the actual price of Upgrading and Repairing PCs DVD, 17th Edition only $54.00 from Que. Also, at this time Que is offering free ground-shipping if you buy directly from Que.

Upgrading and Repairing PCs DVD, 17th Edition also is available as a PDF file (eBook version of the printed edition). You can download it directly from Que. At this time the list price is $48, but with the current Que 10% discount it is $43.19 from Que.

Incidentally, the 3.5-hour DVD from the 16th edition, Upgrading and Repairing PCs DVD, 16th Edition, includes a 90-minute, step-by-step, how-to, PC building and upgrading video -- plus lots of technical reference information and the entire text of several previous editions of Scott's book. The video tutorial is well worth the $10 list price for the 16th edition DVD. If you buy the 16th edition DVD directly from Que at this time, there is a 10% discount making the DVD price $9.00 -- and no charge for ground shipping.

Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PCs is an exceptional and important computer book. We use it. It gets a very well deserved MozillaQuest Magzine Editor's Choice.

The Upgrading and Repairing Series

Over the years, Scott Mueller and Que have published 17 editions of Upgrading and Repairing PCs. In addition to that excellent body of work, they added Upgrading and Repairing (a) Laptops, (b) Linux, (c) Networks, (d) Servers, and (e) Windows to the Upgrading and Repairing series.

Typically, each new, numerical edition of Upgrading and Repairing PCs includes new content plus updating of previous material. That keeps Upgrading and Repairing PCs up to date with the newest computer hardware.

However, there was only one printing of Upgrading and Repairing PCs, Linux Edition. In an e-mail discussion, we asked Scott Mueller why the Upgrading and Repairing PCs Linux Edition had not been updated.

MozillaQuest Magazine: Your "Upgrading and Repairing PCs Linux Edition" is several years old. Why have you not published an updated edition of the Linux version?

Scott Mueller: Unfortunately, the first one didn't sell well enough to justify creating a new edition. Purely economics from the publisher's point of view.

MozillaQuest Magazine: Other than the drivers, what do you see as the main differences between building, upgrading, and/or repairing Widows-based PCs and Linux-based PCs?

Scott Mueller: That's about it. My book is mainly about hardware, and hardware is hardware, no matter what OS or apps you are running.

Page 2 has a list of books in the Upgrading and Repairing series currently in print. Some are older editions. We have included the older editions here because there are free-to-view sample chapters for most of them available on-line, to which we provide links for you. You also will find links to free-to-view sample chapters of the current editions of Upgrading and Repairing series books.

The prices reported in this article are the list prices. However, if you follow the links and purchase any of these books directly from Que, there is a 10% discount at press time. Also, at this time Que is offering free ground-shipping if you buy any of these books directly from Que. The Upgrading and Repairing books also are available from booksellers too.
