Mandrake Linux 8.1 Boxed CDs Available Now

Mandrake started shipping boxed-for-sale copies of its latest offering, the Mandrake Linux 8.1 operating system (OS) distribution on 22 October. Mandrake Linux 8.1 was released for downloading on 27 September 2001. Along with Caldera, Red Hat, and SuSE, Mandrake is one of the four leading Linux OS distributions

According to Mandrake Press Releases and other Mandrake information, Mandrake Linux 8.1 includes the new Linux 2.4.8 kernel -- and both the GNOME 1.4.1 and KDE (K Desktop Environment) 2.2.1 windows-like desktops.

The new KDE 2.2.1 desktop features an improved Konqueror browser and file manager. And for you Mozilla fans, Mandrake Linux 8.1 ships with Mozilla 0.9.4.

Mandrake 8.1 comes in four, boxed-for-sale, flavors:

  • Mandrake Linux Standard Edition - three CDs - $29
  • Mandrake Linux PowerPack Edition - seven CDs - $69
  • Mandrake Linux ProSuite Edition - nine CDs including a special Mandrake Server CD plus a DVD with lots of Linux applications and server configuration wizards - $149 (Not available until 12 November.)
  • Mandrake Linux ProSuite Gold Edition - an Intel Itanium Processor (IA64) version of the ProSuite Edition - $1190 (Not available until mid-November.)

In addition, there is an OEM version for pre-installation.

We have not checked Mandrake Linux 8.1 yet. However, here are excerpts of a Mandrake Press Release announcing the availability of Mandrake Linux 8.1.
