SuSE Linux 8.0 Set for April 22 Release

7 April 2002

SuSE Linux plans to release its SuSE Linux 8.0 operating system (OS) distribution on 22 April 2002. Along with Caldera, Mandrake, and Red Hat, SuSE is one of the four leading Linux OS distributions.

SuSE Linux 8.0 is expected to ship with the new Linux 2.4.18 kernel. You should be able to buy the shiny, shrink-wrapped package at retail stores or directly from SuSE on 22 April. It should be available for downloading on the SuSE FTP site and mirrors then also.

This is a change from the pattern for previous SuSE releases where there was a delay of about two to three weeks after SuSE went on sale before it was available for free downloading. Another SuSE release-pattern change is that both the English and German versions will be released on the same date.

According to the SuSE Linux 8.0 Press Release and other SuSE information, SuSE Linux 8.0 includes both the GNOME 1.4.1 RC1 and KDE (K Desktop Environment) 3.0 windows-like desktops.

Emphasis on desktop here, folks. Looks as though the Linux desktop is live and well.

The new KDE 3.0 desktop features KOffice 1.1.1 and an improved Konqueror browser and file manager. And for you Mozilla fans, SuSE Linux 8.0 is expected to ship with Mozilla 0.9.8 and Netscape 4.79.

Here are the nuts and bolts of the SuSE Press Release announcing the upcoming SuSE Linux 8.0.

Version 8.0 Features 3-step Installation, Security, Desktop and Multimedia features

Today, SuSE Linux announced SuSE Linux 8.0, the company's latest Linux operating system and applications package highlighting increased security, KDE 3 desktop, seamless installation and expanded multimedia capabilities for professional and private desktop and workstation users.

High Security

SuSE Linux 8.0 offers an array of security levels, including mouse click activation of SuSE Personal Firewall 2. In the event of theft, GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) encryption protects laptop and desktop data, allowing only authorized users to read e-mail stored within SuSE Linux. Version 8.0 integrates professional e-mail and data security concepts and advanced security technologies including OpenSSH, PAM, and IPsec.

3-steps Installation

Automated installation improves hardware detection, while SuSE system assistant, YaST2, detects existing Windows partitions, making suggestions for allocating hard disk space and software selection. A mouse click installs most peripheral devices and cards.

KDE 3 And KOffice

SuSE debuts with KDE 3, the latest graphical desktop for Linux. KDE 3, KOffice with KWord, KSpread, KPresenter and an illustration module, and the e-mail client, KMail, are highly stable products.

Multimedia: CD-writing and Games

SuSE Linux 8.0 enhances CD writing, viewing and editing videos and sound mixing with an editing studio and synthesizer. SuSE is first to present version 0.9 of Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) in support of most professional and personal sound cards. Popular games such as "Vegastrike", "Racer", "FlightGear", and the adventure game, "Nethack Falconseye" are included.

Power for Professionals

SuSE Linux 8.0, using Kernel 2.4.18, more than 1200 drivers, XFree86 4.2 support of graphics cards and glibc 2.2.5 represents state-of-the-art Linux technology. In addition to numerous improvements in the areas of firewall configuration, ISDN, modem, and mail, YaST2 now comes with a new module for the activation of high-rate data transfer modes for hard disks (direct memory access). The latest central Linux tools include: web server Apache 1.3.23 and file and print server for Windows networks, Samba 2.2.3a. Basic system advantages such as memory protection, preemptive multitasking, optimized memory management, and excellent network properties enhance professional deployment and ambitious home use.
