Next, let's merge the K Taskbar into the K Panel in order to make a more MS-Windows-like Taskbar Panel (the MS Windows Start Button, Quick Launch Toolbar, System Tray, and Taskbar combination). To do that, simply click on the arrow immediately to the left of the K Menu icon on the K Panel. Please see Figure 6. You can toggle the appearance of the K Panel and Taskbar by clicking on that arrow to the left of the K Menu icon.

Changing the Desktop Background Color

Now let's change the K desktop background color from blue to the MS Windows default theme off-green color. It's simple.

Just pop up the K Menu and click on Settings > Desktop > Colors to pop up the Display Settings box. Next, click on the One-Color blue color bar in the Colors section to pop up the Select Color box. Please see Figure 7.

Then select the dark, off-green swatch in the System Colors section of the Select Color box by clicking on the swatch. Now click OK in the Select Color box and then Accept and OK in the Display Settings box to reset the desktop background color to off-green.

Tweaking the Icons Look

As you can see from Figure 8, our customized desktop theme now looks lots more like the MS Windows desktop skin then what it did when we first switched from the GNOME desktop to the K desktop. Let's wrap up today's session by tweaking the way the desktop icons are displayed.

Figure 8. Opening the Desktop Icons box.

To do that, please start by popping up the K Menu and clicking on Settings > Desktop > Desktop Icons to pop up the Desktop Icons box. Please see Figure 8.

Then simply check the Transparent Text for Desktop Icons check box and crank 20 into the Horizontal Root Grid Spacing input box. Next, click Apply and then OK to reset the desktop icons. Please see Figure 9.
