Sneak Preview of Mozilla Milestone 0.8.1 -- Release Expected This Week

Mike Angelo -- 19 March 2001(c)

(Updated 22 March 2001)

The Milestone 0.8.1 edition of the Mozilla browser-suite release set for Monday, March 19, 2001 has been delayed. So, in the meantime we took a look at Friday's 0.8.1 release candidate for a sneak preview of what's new and improved since Milestone 0.8.

Check the MozillaQuest Magazine front page (mozillaquest.com) every now and then to find out when Milestone 0.8.1 is released.

One nifty new Mozilla feature in 0.8.1 that our sneak preview found is the hierarchical history. It does a nice job of organizing the URL history by days. You can add the hierarchical history to the sidebar by using the sidebar customize procedure. Or, you simply can click on Tasks > Tools > History. (Please see Figure 1.)

Figure 1. The new Mozilla hierarchical history.

You now should be able to remove unwanted themes from your hard drive with the new 0.8.1 theme uninstall feature. This feature is available in the themes preferences. Simply click on View > Apply Themes > Theme Preferences > (select theme) > Uninstall (theme name).

Some support for Gopher has been added to Mozilla in this Milestone. However, not all gopher features are supported. The best way to access Gopher still is with a Gopher client.

To use the Gopher feature enter the gopher URL in the location input box, for example gopher://umn.edu . That brings up an FTP-like, directory-tree display of the UMN (University of Minnesota) Gopher server. However, at this time you will not be able to use Gopher search tools such as Veronica with Mozilla.

There are lots of under-the-hood changes to ChatZilla, the Mozilla-based IRC (Internet Relay Chat) client. The channel-view and server-view tabs have been moved from above the channel window to below the channel window. Some IRC commands have been added or improved. ChatZilla is the IRC Chat client listed in the Mozilla Tasks menu.

If you cannot wait for the official Mozilla 0.8.1 release, you might want to grab a sneak preview too. The March 21, 2001 release candidate builds are available on the Mozilla FTP server. (Links in the Resources section below.)

However, we recommend that you wait for the final 0.8.1 release rather than use the release candidate builds. There are a few nasty bugs and problems in the release candidate builds such as the sidebar bookmarks not loading.

Earlier this month, the Mozilla Organization added Milestone 0.8.1 as an additional release to its Mozilla Development Roadmap and release schedule.

Milestone 0.8.1 was added to the Roadmap schedule in order to allow the Mozilla developers time to fix more bugs prior to the Mozilla Milestone 0.9 release. In part this additional bug-busting round is because Mozilla 0.9, in addition to being a development Milestone release, also serves more or less as a beta branch-point for those people developing embedded Mozilla-based products that want to have a beta of their products.

Milestone 0.8.1 was added in between the February 0.8 release and the upcoming 0.9 Milestone. It replaces and pushes-back the Mozilla 0.9 release date in the Roadmap schedule. That in turn pushes back the Mozilla 1.0 release date.

Table 1 shows the March Roadmap revision. For more information about the Roadmap revisions, please see Mozilla 1.0 Release Pushed Back -- Milestone 0.8.1 Inserted into Development Roadmap Schedule.

The milestones are intended to be periodic check points for progress on the project, stability of builds, porting status, and are entry points for additional mozilla (sic) contributors to provide testing and engineering help on the project. (Project Sea Monkey)

The new Netscape 6 browser-suite and the upcoming NeoPlanet browser are based upon the cross-platform Mozilla browser-suite. AOL/Time-Warner's Netscape division released its Netscape 6.01 browser-suite minor upgrade 8 February 2001

Check the MozillaQuest Magazine front page (mozillaquest.com) to find out when Milestone 0.8.1 is released. Meanwhile, if you cannot resist the temptation to take your own 0.8.1 sneak preview, you can try the 0.8.1 release candidates (links below).
