Mozilla 0.9.2 Branches on Schedule, but with Many Bugs

Mike Angelo -- 23 June 2001 (c)

Webmaster´s Note: Mozilla Milestone 0.9.2 was released June 29, 2001. Please see our story, Mozilla Milestone 0.9.2 Browser-Suite Released, for download links and the details.

With more than 280 bugs still targeted to it, the upcoming Mozilla Milestone 0.9.2 edition was branched overnight from the main development-tree trunk -- on schedule. That's an unusually large bug count for a newly branched release candidate.

Compare that 280+ bugs in Mozilla 0.9.2 as its branch starts, to the some 20 to 30 bugs that still were targeted to Mozilla 0.9.1 when it was branched from the main development-tree trunk. Mozilla 0.9.2 at its branching has some ten times the bugs that Mozilla 0.9.1 had at its branching. Please see our article Mozilla 0.9.1 Branches Behind Schedule for more information about the Mozilla 0.9.1 branching.

The June, Mozilla Organization's Mozilla Development Roadmap document shows that Mozilla 0.9.2 is scheduled for release on 25 June 2001 (please see Table 1). However, it is doubtful that Mozilla 0.9.2 will be released then -- unless the Mozilla developers intend to release a very buggy milestone.

  • Blocker - Blocks development and/or testing work.
  • Critical - Crashes, loss of data, severe memory leak.
  • Major - Major loss of function.
  • Normal - This is the run of the mill bug.
  • Minor - Minor loss of function, or other problem where an easy workaround is present.
  • Trivial - Cosmetic problem like misspelled words or misaligned text.
  • Enhancement - Request for enhancement.

From Help Using The Bugzilla Query Form. Link in Resouces section,

As we "go to press" with this story, there are some 283 assigned, new, or reopened bugs targeted to Mozilla 0.9.2. Seven of these bugs are listed as blockers, thirty-five as critical, forty-seven as major, one-hundred seventy-three normal, five minor, eleven trivial, and five as enhancement. Was Mozilla 0.9.2 really ready for branching?

Additionally there are some 1,030 bugs targeted to Milestone 0.9.3 and 1,560 bugs targeted to Mozilla 1.0. That's a total of 2,875 bugs targeted to these three releases. This total does not include all the additional bugs that are targeted to other Mozilla releases.

Moreover, at publication time not all of the usual assortment of Mozilla builds are in the Milestone 0.9.2 branch in the public Mozilla FTP nightly-builds directory. Was Mozilla 0.9.2 really ready for branching?

Please check the MozillaQuest Magazine front-page (mozillaquest.com) sidebar every now and then for bug count updates and for Mozilla Milestone 0.9.2 progress updates.

Incidentally in that Roadmap article (published yesterday morning EDT) we noted that the Mozilla Organization's document, Mozilla Milestone Plan, showed the Mozilla Milestone 0.9.2 release set for June 31 (sic), 2001. (Please see Figure 1 in the Resources section .) Meanwhile, the Mozilla Development Roadmap, another Mozilla Organization document, shows Mozilla 0.9.2 release set for June 25, 2001. (Please see Figure 2 in the Resources section .)

Yesterday evening EDT, the Mozilla Organization eliminated the inaccuracies and confusion in its Mozilla Milestone Plan page by eliminating the Mozilla Milestone 0.9.2 entry from the Milestone Plan table on that page. (Please see Figure 3.) The Mozilla Organization also changed the name of that page to Old Mozilla Milestone Plan. And it added with emphasis the language: This page has been replaced by our roadmap and is kept here for historical purposes .

Please see our article, Mozilla 0.9.2 Set for 25 June Release -- More Mozilla Roadmap Plan Changes and Chaos, for more information about the June 2001 Mozilla Development Roadmap and development schedule revisions.

In May, for the third time in as many months, the Lizard wranglers pushed back the anticipated Mozilla release date in their Mozilla tree management diagram. The May Mozilla tree management diagram shows Mozilla 1.0 release now set for early Q4 – 15 October 2001. For more information about the May roadmap and development plan revisions and the Mozilla tree management diagram, please see our article Mozilla Roadmap Plan Changed Again -- Mozilla 1.0 Set Back to Q4 2001.

The Mozilla browser-suite is built on top of the cross-platform (XP) and open source Mozilla applications programming framework. It is the basic, prototype, Mozilla-based, browser-suite application upon which other browsers, such as Netscape 6 and Netscape 6.1 are built.

Currently, Mozilla pre-1.0 Milestone and daily development builds are available for the BSD, Linux, Macintosh, Microsoft Windows, OS/2, Sun, and several UNIX platforms. Source code is available if you want to custom compile your own Mozilla builds.

If you like, you can grab a copy of the latest Mozilla 0.9.2 branch build from the Mozilla Organization FTP server. Don't forget to report any bugs you find to Bugzilla.

Stay Tuned.
