Netscape 6.01 Browser-Suite Released

Mike Angelo -- 8 February 2001(c)

Webmaster´s Note: Netscape 6.1 was released August 8, 2001. Please see our story, Netscape 6.1 Browser-Suite Released Again?, for download links and the details.

Time-Warner/AOl's Netscape division placed its Netscape 6.01 browser-suite upgrade for the Linux, Macintosh, and Microsoft Windows platforms on its FTP servers overnight. The Netscape 6.0 browser suite was made available for public downloading on 9 November 2000, some three months ago.

According to the NS 6.01 edition of the Netscape 6 Release Notes here is what's new in NS 6.01:

  • Enhanced stability. Netscape 6.01 includes improvements that make installing and using it much more reliable than version 6.0.
  • Fixes for many of the most frequently reported problems in version 6.0. These fixes address, among other things, support for the Mac OS scroll wheel, increased accuracy of the Security lock icon, bookmark descriptions (they are no longer lost), and other user-interface feedback issues.

The Netscape 6 browser suite and the upcoming NeoPlanet browser are based upon the cross-platform Mozilla browser-suite. The current Milestone Mozilla browser-suite release is Mozilla 0.7. The Mozilla Milestone 0.8 release is expected next week.

For more information about the Mozilla browser-suite and downloading it, please see our recent articles Mozilla Milestone 0.8 Release Expected Next Week and Mozilla Milestone 0.7 Browser-Suite Released.

To download and install the Netscape 6.01 browser suite, please see: How To Download, Install, & Configure Netscape 6.0 -- Safely!. However, when you get to page 5 there, here are the updates for version 6.01 downloading:

(Note: if you try to look at that FTP Linux directory in Windows you might see netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-sea_tar.tar instead of netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-sea_tar.gz. Don't worry about that. When you go to download it in Linux, Linux will get it right.)
