C: Configuring Netscape 6 -- Preferences When the Netscape 6 installation finishes, it auto-starts the Netscape 6 program. As Netscape 6 auto-starts for this first time, it tries to contact the Netscape NetCenter, establish a dialog with the NetCenter, and also open up the Netscape homepage in your Netscape 6 browser. Because you have installed Netscape 6 off-line it is not able to contact the Netscape servers over the Internet. This now gives you the opportunity to configure your Netscape preferences, including privacy and security protection, before your new Netscape installation has a chance to contact the Netscape servers and pass any information about you, your computer, or your Netscape installation to Netscape -- or before the Netscape servers have a chance to place cookies on your hard drive. Even if you choose to install Netscape 6 on-line, you still should go through the default preference settings tutorial here. In the Basic Configuration steps below, you will learn how to set the preferences that most impact privacy and security. Basic Configuration Step 1:After the installation is complete the Activation screen shown in Figure 9 pops up. It pops up because you are off-line and it cannot connect to the Netscape servers via the Internet.
Simply click on that Activation screen to move on. That brings up the Netscape 6 browser window as shown downsized in Figure 10. |
